Why convert PNG to GIF?
GIF works with very old systems and with platforms that expect simple animation, but it is limited to 256 colours.
If a PNG has transparency it is kept when the target format supports it; otherwise the background colour you pick is used.
PNG vs GIF
| PNG | GIF | |
|---|---|---|
| File extension | .png | .gif |
| Compression | Lossless | Lossless (256 colours) |
| Transparency | Yes | Limited |
| Animation | No | Yes |
| Typical file size | Large (for photos) | Medium |
| Support | Everywhere | Everywhere |
| Best for | logos, screenshots, icons, graphics with transparent backgrounds | short, simple animations and low-colour graphics |
PNG is a lossless format with full transparency (an alpha channel). GIF is an old format limited to 256 colours that supports simple animation. With only 256 colours, photos look degraded; transparency is on/off only.
Tips for the best results
- Because of the 256-colour limit, photos can show colour banding; prefer WebP or AVIF when you can.
- For the web, limiting the width to 1600 pixels cuts file size a lot while keeping visual quality (Resize section).
- Metadata such as GPS location and camera details (EXIF) is always removed from the output.
Privacy and security
Conversion runs entirely in your browser (using WebAssembly); your images are never uploaded to our server and never leave your device. The server only receives anonymous counters that contain no file names or content (source/target format, size, duration). Metadata such as location and camera details is always stripped from the output.
