How to Make a Favicon: Sizes and Setup

To make a favicon, produce favicon.ico (16–48 px), a 180 px apple-touch-icon and 192/512 px Android icons from a square logo, put the files in your site root and add the link tags to the <head>.

Design tips

Adding it to HTML

<link rel="icon" href="/en/favicon.ico" sizes="any">
<link rel="icon" type="image/png" sizes="32x32" href="/en/favicon-32x32.png">
<link rel="apple-touch-icon" href="/en/apple-touch-icon.png">

To get every file and this code in one step, use the favicon generator. For your favicon to appear in Google results, the file must be crawlable and the icon should be a multiple of 48 pixels (48, 96, 144…).

Frequently asked questions

Does a new favicon show up immediately?
Browsers cache favicons aggressively; the new icon may take a few days to appear or until the cache is cleared.
Can I use an SVG favicon?
Modern browsers support SVG favicons, but keep an ICO/PNG fallback for compatibility.
